Hurricanes Upset Blues
As well as the Carolina Hurricanes have played under the new head coach of Kirk Muller, it hasn't really shown up in their favor or on the scoreboard. After limping away from a hard faught loss against the New York Rangers Tuesday night, the Canes battled back to beat the number one team in the league, St. Louis Blues.
It seemed as though Andreas "Chicken Noodle" Nodl had about ten opportunities to score a goal in the first period but just couldn't cash the check. However, opportunites seemed to lean toward the Blues in the first and second period as they kept the puck in the offensive zone for the majority of the period.
Carolina seemed to have trouble on the powerplay setting up in the offensive zone. Although the Blues lost statistically, they won the battle on the ice in my opinion. They're the number one team in the league and they played like it tonight, Cam Ward was a brick wall in net tallying his 20th career shut out and his 200th career win.
The Hurricanes also had a bit of trouble getting shots off, but they were able to manage on a lucky bounce wrap-around by Chad LaRose in the third period. Jeff Skinner finished it off with a nice snap shot to the top corner. Earlier in the game, Tim Brent had a beautiful breakaway opportunity but the puck bounced off the outside crossbar and back out. Luckily enough for the Hurricanes, their bad penalties didn't cost them a single goal.
Overall a great game and the Canes were able to come out on top by not giving up two goal lead and making the game go to overtime and then losing. I know they're not in the playoff race this year, but next year they look like they will be one hell of a team.
