Hurricanes Shut Out Capitals
There's a good chance that if you're a Washington Capitals fan and you witnessed tonight's game against the Hurricanes, you might be beating your head against a brick wall. However, on the other end, the last place team in the Eastern Conference is celebrating. You don't see an annihilating 5-0 victory over the Washington Capitals everyday.
It was the Hurricanes' game from the start considering not even 10 minutes into the game they had a two point lead on the Capitals. The Hurricanes were able to take advantage of every opportunity they had totaling 40 shots to 17. I know, I did a double take as well. Not to mention that Eric Staal was a -33 before the All-Star break and is now a -15 with 60 points. Staal totaled three points with two goals and an assist. When you call Slump Busters, they usually do a good job.
In every aspect on the ice the Capitals were beaten, especially fights. Derek Joslin and Matt Hendricks got into two tusstles and Justin Faulk must have been taking notes from Rocky, as he delivered some nice blows to Troy Brouwer. The Capitals are a team that only two years ago were the number one team in the league and now they are struggling to fight for a playoff spot. I have no clue what happened to Alexander Ovechkin, but somebody needs to light a fire under him. I mean someone, possibly Kirk Muller, lit a fire under Eric Staal and look where he is now. You can't be a captain in the locker room and not on the ice, which is what it looks like is happening with Ovechkin.
So, Justin Peters gets his first NHL career shutout, Justin Faulk gets in his first fight, the Capitals get spanked, and the Hurricanes are 8 points out of a playoff spot. Carolina has 19 games left and if they can continue to get wins like tonight, anything's possible.
